City of Peace
“What are you thinking?” Avram asks me gently as we walk in the shadows of the old city.
“’O, Jerusalem, Jerusalem!’”1 I quote. “Why so much suffering, Avram, the blood that has flowed across the centuries into this day?”
“Our hands bear that guilt.”
“And sickness, earthquakes, floods?”
“Do you wonder nature suffers as part of the judgment on us?”
“The curse!” I snort.
Avram speaks quietly. “The Maker of the Universe has not left us without blessings, of which He is the foremost, or redemption, because of His love.”
“I only see hatred.”
“Then that is all you will find.”
1Luke 13:34 — “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!“
Psalm 69:32
When the humble see it they will be glad;
you who seek God, let your hearts revive.
Acts 17:26-27
And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us ….
WOW! just WOW! Speechless…

It’s unfortunate that religions that are ostensibly about peace and love have become the basis for so much pain and hatred. Perhaps one day we, all of us, will see the light.

You’re so right, Iain. We should be seeking enlightenment every day of our lives, what a difference that would make. We’ve all fallen short.

100% agree that nature suffers from our wickedness!

Dear Dora,
Wars and rumors of wars. A house divided against itself. Strange weather. Wonderful story.

Nature certainly knows how to punish us for our wrongdoings.

There’s a certain Catch-22 aspect to it for sure. Thanks for reading, Keith.

Maybe we only see what we expect to see. But, it is true, there is a lot of hate in the world. May we be a vessel for His love. Inspiring story, Dora.

Avram was wise. His friend has become bitter, unforgiving, and unable to see anything but the darkness. But no lengthy sermon could have hit so solidly on the right spot. Well done.

Wisdom begins with the fear (reverence, awe) of God — Nothing else gives us the humility needed to “walk in the light.” Thanks so much for your kind comments, Linda.

It’s hard to recall a time when there has been so much conflict… about almost everything. Very nicely written.

True, and we need more self-reflection to see how we got to this state and how to mend. Thanks, Sandra.

Many people have the opportunity for a fulfilled life of joy and peace, others squander this greatest gift.. Unfortunately, they believe in hate and discord filling their bitter hearts and are never contented.
You raise the point very well indeed.

We reap what we sow. May God bless those who sow light instead of darkness. Thank you, James, for reading and commenting 🙂
