Autumnal Severance

Wallpaper Safari

Autumnal severance

season’s flashing tonality

present past present future

the shin hurt of childhood quarrel

aging fruit and jarring tumbler

last year’s fashion muffler, tomorrow’s cinder

moth-eaten “do my bones look big in this?” sweater

witch’s brew of prescription medicines

growing old is time’s obscurer

a flash of autumnal red

like twinkling stars

fade and fall

Autumn or Spring?

April or September

There’s a chill in the air

Colors catch my eye

Slipping free of winter

Chase the roses

From summer’s embers

Green carpets laid

Accent red furnishings

Into wooded streams

A Beautiful Fall Day

For Joseph’s Home Photo Challenge 11-7-2020

Nothing communicates the fullness of “autumn joy” like a fat, well-formed pumpkin waiting to be admired.

Swallow it up, ladies and gents, in pies, in meditations, in orange fury of sunshiny glow!

How grateful I am for pumpkins on this beautiful fall day! Thank you, Lord God of heaven and earth, for all things bright and beautiful!

Seasonal Ghosts

Fallen leaves, sudden colors surround our steps
this season of the encroaching frost, where breath
shivers surfeit with ghosts, phantasms of shade and shape
lingering on the outskirts of our gaze, entrapped
to swirl in gossamer guise of follies unguessed
flesh and blood whose course ran verdure green
but now, as the dry veined leaves, pose beleaguered
papery skinned revenants awaiting All Hallows’ Eve
as if deserving no more than our own fading grins.

note: Charles Baudelaire’s famous poem “The Revenant” should haunt every evocation of revenants. Check out this translation of the poem at Sublime Terror.
